Osteoporosis (Bone Loss): Don’t Underestimate This Silent Risk

Osteoporosis is a stealthy condition in which bone density decreases and bones become fragile. It often causes no symptoms; the first sign may be a fracture after a minor fall. The risk increases significantly in women after age 40, especially during menopause.

What Is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is the loss of bone strength due to weakening of bone tissue. Bones gradually become porous and thin, and can fracture even with small trauma.

Most common fracture sites:

- Hip

- Spine

- Wrist

Who Is at Risk?

- Postmenopausal women

- People with a family history

- Those with a sedentary lifestyle

- People with vitamin D and calcium deficiency

- Long-term corticosteroid (cortisone) users

- Smokers and alcohol users

Early evaluation is vital for people in risk groups.

What Are the Symptoms?

Osteoporosis usually progresses silently. However, these can be warning signs:

- Loss of height

- Back pain

- Stooped posture (hunching)

- Fractures after minor trauma

A definitive diagnosis is made with a bone density test (DEXA).

Can Osteoporosis Be Prevented?

Yes—largely, it can be prevented and slowed down:

- Regular weight-bearing exercise

- Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake

- Safe sun exposure

- Balanced nutrition

- Regular health check-ups

Medical follow-up is especially important during menopause.

Why Are Home Monitoring and Fall Prevention Important?

For people with osteoporosis, the biggest risk is falling. Small home adjustments can prevent serious fractures:

- Fixing slippery floors

- Improving night lighting

- Balance exercises

- Regular vital sign monitoring

At Bir Adım Sağlık, we support bone health monitoring—especially for postmenopausal women—and help reduce fall risk with our at-home nursing and care services.

Remember: Osteoporosis progresses silently. But the precautions you take can quietly save lives.
