A Common Problem in Summer: Heatstroke

Rising temperatures and humidity during the summer months can strain the body’s ability to regulate its temperature. In particular, staying under the sun for long periods, being in enclosed and poorly ventilated environments, or not drinking enough fluids increases the risk of heatstroke.

This condition often starts like simple fatigue, but if it isn’t recognized in time, it can progress to serious health problems.

What Is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is the breakdown of the body’s temperature-regulation mechanism as a result of excessive heat exposure. Sweating becomes insufficient, and body temperature begins to rise.

It is more common during the summer months, especially among people who work outdoors, older adults, and children.

What Are the Symptoms?

The most common symptoms of heatstroke include:

- Extreme fatigue and weakness

- Dizziness

- Headache

- Nausea and vomiting

- Heavy sweating or inability to sweat

- Muscle cramps

- Rapid pulse

- Difficulty concentrating

In more severe cases, confusion may also occur.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

- Individuals over 65

- Infants and young children

- People with heart disease or high blood pressure

- Outdoor workers

- People who exercise or play sports

- Individuals who don’t drink enough fluids

What Should Be Done?

- Drink enough water throughout the day.

- Avoid staying in the sun as much as possible between 11:00 and 16:00.

- Choose light-colored, thin clothing.

- Avoid enclosed and poorly ventilated environments.

- If prolonged physical activity is planned, take breaks at frequent intervals.

When Should You Be Concerned?

Once symptoms begin, the person should be moved to a cool environment and given fluids. If symptoms persist or there is any change in consciousness, medical help should be sought.

Early intervention is especially important for older adults and children, as the condition can worsen quickly.

At Bir Adım Sağlık, we care about raising awareness among individuals and families about the health risks that can arise from rising summer temperatures.
