What Is Epilepsy?
Correct Intervention During a Seizure Can Save Lives
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that is much more common than many people realize, yet it is still surrounded by misinformation. Many people may panic during a seizure because they do not know what to do and may attempt incorrect interventions. However, accurate knowledge is critically important both for the patient’s safety and for helping those nearby remain calm.
What Is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a chronic condition characterized by recurrent seizures caused by sudden and uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain’s nerve cells.
Not every seizure means epilepsy; however, if seizures occur repeatedly, the individual should definitely be evaluated by a neurology specialist.
How Can an Epileptic Seizure Be Recognized?
Seizures do not always involve falling to the ground and convulsions. Symptoms may vary from person to person:
Sudden loss of consciousness
Convulsions and shaking
Staring blankly at a fixed point
Repetitive or meaningless movements
Short-term confusion
Some patients may experience warning signs before a seizure, known as an “aura” (such as unusual smells, dizziness, or nausea).
What Should Be Done During a Seizure?
This is the most critical part.
✔️ Lay the person down on a safe surface.
✔️ Turn their head to the side (to help keep the airway open).
✔️ Remove hard or dangerous objects nearby.
✔️ Monitor the duration of the seizure.
❌ Do not put anything in their mouth.
❌ Do not try to give them water.
❌ Do not try to restrain or stop the convulsions.
***Emergency medical support should be sought if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes or if the person experiences repeated seizures one after another.
Can Epilepsy Be Treated?
Today, most epilepsy patients can control their seizures with regular medication treatment. During the treatment process, the following are critically important:
Taking medications regularly
Maintaining healthy sleep habits
Managing stress
Attending regular medical check-ups
Why Is At-Home Care Important for Epilepsy Patients?
Epilepsy is not only about seizures. Patients, especially older adults or those with additional medical conditions, need regular monitoring and a safe living environment.
At-home support such as:
Vital sign monitoring
Medication adherence checks
Seizure record tracking
Patient and family education
can significantly improve the patient’s quality of life.
As Bir Adım Sağlık, we provide at-home nursing and monitoring services to help epilepsy patients maintain a safer life, while also educating families about proper intervention.
Remember: Accurate information is stronger than panic. And sometimes, one correct action during a seizure can protect a life.
