In recent years, COVID-19 has completely captured our attention and collectively changed our daily habits, becoming the leading topic ahead of all other information and research.

It quickly and naturally became one of the criteria we consider in every situation and detail we face and need to manage—both in our professional and personal lives.

So, how can we protect ourselves during pregnancy, which should be one of the most sheltered periods of our lives, and how should we manage things if we are affected?

Undoubtedly, the most important method of protection against any illness is strengthening our natural immune system.

As we all know, to strengthen natural immunity, healthy nutrition and plenty of fluid intake, hygiene (especially hand hygiene), adequate sleep, avoiding stress as much as possible, and an active lifestyle (exercise) provide significant benefits.

Although, due to living conditions, it may not always be fully possible to follow all of these at every stage, it is also true that during pregnancy they require special attention and are largely adhered to.

Especially in environments where strong immunity is maintained and preventive measures are taken, COVID-19 can be considered less risky.

In addition to personal measures such as hygiene and a distanced lifestyle, when strong immunity is possible by living away from the illness, we can speak of a safe environment for the pregnancy period. In cases where entering public areas is unavoidable, feeling safe with a mask and washing hands frequently can also be added to these precautions.

Despite all this, if we are exposed to the illness unknowingly or out of necessity, how can we protect ourselves?

As is known, pregnancy is the most important period in which our bodies require extra caution regarding chemicals.

For this very reason, medication is not recommended unless absolutely necessary, and it is also advised to avoid supplements.

If medication use is necessary, using it only with a doctor’s recommendation will be important for both the mother and the baby.

So, what else can be done?

To support your immunity, natural methods should be continued; as much as possible, you should spend the period resting and continue to drink plenty of fluids.

During illness, you should act with your doctor’s guidance and follow the recommendations your doctor gives in a way that will affect you and your baby as little as possible.

Since it is known that vitamin support is especially important during this period, you should also pay attention to consuming fruits and vegetables.

If you suspect diabetes during pregnancy, you should not neglect to cooperate with your doctor regarding nutrition.

It is beneficial to stay away from stress and anxiety during this period:

Some studies indicate that babies develop immunity against illnesses experienced during pregnancy. For this reason, rather than worrying about your baby, you should avoid stress and take better care of yourself.

Whether we encounter the illness or not, do not forget that stress during pregnancy negatively affects you and your hormones—and therefore your baby.

A healthy pregnancy is the most important thing for both the newborn baby and the mother.

The healthiest gift you can give your baby during pregnancy will be taking good care of yourself.
