In an adult human anatomy, there are approximately 206 bones. Our bones play an important role in keeping our posture upright and enabling body movement with the help of muscles. However, bones are also fragile structures, and fractures can occur due to various reasons such as accidents, falls, or impacts.
In cases of suspected fracture, correct and early diagnosis is important. For diagnosis, a clinical examination by an orthopedic specialist and radiological imaging are primarily expected.
When moving to the treatment stage, many factors are evaluated, such as the type of fracture, the physician’s interpretation, the location of the fracture, and its severity. In the orthopedic specialist’s assessment, the process may continue with methods such as immobilization and casting, and if necessary, surgical procedures.
From diagnosis and treatment through the healing period, patients’ physical activities may be restricted, which can lead to many negative conditions such as muscle atrophy (weakness), decreased joint range of motion, swelling (edema), pain, and calcification.
Starting physical therapy early and regulating the diet during this period has a significant effect on bone healing.
Physical Therapy Process:
Patients referred to physical therapy by the supervising orthopedic specialist are assessed on-site by expert physiotherapists in accordance with the diagnosis and treatment process.
During the evaluation stage, the physiotherapist tests the functional condition of the body and determines an individualized physical therapy program.
The main applications in the physical therapy program are as follows:
- Electrotherapy: Pain is reduced with TENS current. Atrophic muscles are strengthened with EMS mode.
- Cold Application: At the end of treatment, the swollen area is kept elevated and a cold pack is applied.
- Contrast Bath: Helps reduce pain and swelling, increase circulation, support repair of damaged tissues, and improve joint range of motion.
- Exercise Program: Depending on the location and severity of the fracture, a personalized program is determined by the expert physiotherapist. The recovery process can vary for each fracture patient.
The goal of physical therapy is to strengthen the patient’s muscles pain-free with the support of specialists and help them return to routine daily activities as soon as possible.
