Essential Information and Safe Practices
Blood pressure (BP) is necessary for maintaining blood circulation in the body. However, when it is too high or too low, organs such as the heart, kidneys, eyes, and brain can be negatively affected. For individuals receiving home care, monitoring blood pressure is important for overall health status, treatment adherence, and daily quality of life.
*This article is not intended to diagnose or recommend treatment; it aims only to raise awareness and support safe monitoring habits for patients and their families.*
What Is Blood Pressure?
The pressure created when the heart pumps blood into the arteries is called **systolic pressure** (upper number). The pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting between beats is called **diastolic pressure** (lower number).
Example reading: 120/80 mmHg
- 120 → systolic (upper)
- 80 → diastolic (lower)

Why Monitor Blood Pressure?
✔ Helps identify possible causes of symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, and fatigue
✔ Provides useful data for doctors when adjusting medications
✔ Supports risk management in chronic conditions
✔ Shows how daily routines affect health
Monitoring is especially important for:
- People diagnosed with **hypertension (high blood pressure)**
- Those with **cardiovascular disease**
- People with **kidney disease or diabetes**
- **Older adults**
- Patients who need follow-up after being discharged home
What You Should Know for Safe At-Home Blood Pressure Measurement
Home BP monitors make the process easier. Safe practices include:
1) Before Measuring
- Rest for at least **5 minutes**
- Avoid measuring right after eating, drinking caffeinated beverages (tea/coffee), or smoking
- Do not talk during the measurement
2) Correct Position
- Sit with your back supported
- Keep feet flat on the floor
- Keep the arm at heart level
3) Using the Device
- Upper-arm monitors are preferred
- The cuff size should fit the arm circumference
4) Keeping Records
Blood pressure should be evaluated over time, not based on a single reading. Recording **date – time – BP – pulse – notes** makes medical evaluation easier.
Informational Notes About High and Low Blood Pressure
*(For awareness only)*
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
It may occur without symptoms. In some people, it can cause:
- Headache
- Palpitations
- Dizziness
- Nosebleeds
- Blurred vision
Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension)
In some people, it can cause:
- Feeling faint
- Cold sweating
- Weakness
- Dizziness
*Symptoms can vary from person to person; medical evaluation is important.*
When Should You Call Emergency Services (112)?
- Severe dizziness
- Speech difficulties
- Weakness on one side of the body
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Changes in consciousness
*These symptoms may indicate serious conditions. It’s important to call 112 rather than trying to manage the situation at home.*
Daily Habits That Support Blood Pressure Monitoring at Home
*(Does not replace medical treatment)*
- Regular sleep
- Do not reduce or increase salt intake without medical advice
- Pay attention to fluid intake
- Reduce excessive stress and tense environments
- Consult a doctor about smoking and alcohol
- Take medications regularly if prescribed by a doctor
*These suggestions are not individualized. Each patient’s age, condition, and treatment are different. Medication and dietary changes should always be made with a doctor’s guidance.*
